With the Democratic National Convention (DNC) less than a week away the City, State, and Federal Governments are ramping up security and instituting many checkpoints. The Uptown area of Charlotte, where most events are taking place, will be divided into three zones. Each security zone will require heighten searches and checking stations. Areas of Charlotte within the Highway 277 Freeway will be the most secure areas.
These checking stations give the police and federal agent’s unbridled discretion in whether to search your vehicle or not. Obviously any suspicious behavior will warrant a search, however, the police will probably institute random searches as well. In addition, drivers will be observed and tested for impairment from alcohol. Also, local agencies will be conducting random DWI checkpoints throughout the greater Charlotte Region, as city and county officials anticipate a large number of DNC visitors to commute to hotels located outside the 277 area.
Additionally, police and law enforcement agencies will be patrolling the Uptown area on foot and bike to insure State laws against open container, public intoxication, and trespassing are not violated. The City of Charlotte has also installed hundreds of security cameras in Uptown to insure safety. The Mecklenburg County Courthouse is closed for regular business but first appearances for arrests and bond hearings must remain open and the courthouse will be working on a skeleton crew.
