If you’re a social drinker, you probably put at least a little thought into what you’re putting into your body. Maybe you know that you’re going to be drinking quite a bit this weekend. There’s a birthday party, a Panthers game, or some other commitment. Whatever your reason— you know that your entire weekend is pretty much dedicated to having fun, and drinking with friends. For this reason, you’re considering healthier drinking options. While you know you’re drinking a lot, you don’t want to add a bunch of sugar into the mix. So, how do I drink more consciously? Lucky for you, we have a few options…
Healthier Drinking Options: Minimal Guilt Drinking
Spiked Seltzer
The big craze this summer was undeniably the introduction of those new spiked seltzers. They’re low-carb, low-call, gluten-free, 5% alcohol, and all-natural. All in all, it’s a pretty great way to drink, and it doesn’t sit too heavy on the stomach. Because they’re such a popular item right now, many bars have begun to carry them. So, ask your local bartender. If they carry these babies, it’s a great, guilt-free way to indulge.
Try a mojito
If you want something that pack a bit more punch than spiked seltzer, consider a mojito. Mojitos are a simple, delicious, refreshing beverage that isn’t too heavy on sugar. In facgt, the ingredients mostly come down to rum, mint, lime, a little simple syrup, and seltzer. The ingredients are minimal, lightly sugary, and you get a little bit of nutritional value and freshness from the mint. Not too bad in terms of healthier drinking options that still taste delicious.
Keep your mixers minimal
The less mixers you use, the healthier your drinking. While a whiskey ginger may be delicious, it’s sugary. Especially when you have a bunch of them. So, consider drinking your alcohol on the rocks, neat, or with a splash of water and fruit. By taking this route, you skip the sugariest part of drinking. Furthermore, lightly colored alcohols (like vodka) are lower in calories. So, maybe skip the whiskey ginger altogether and go for a vodka water with lime. No one said it was going to taste delicious, but it’s all in what you want out of your night of drinking.
Take some vitamins tomorrow
Drinking with friends can be a lot of fun, but the way you feel in the morning… not so much. Combat that by putting together a post-drinking vitamin kit. Alcohol is a diuretic, which means that you’re losing a lot of vitamins and nutrients throughout the evening. Put together a kit with vitamin B complex, or try those Emergen-C packets which taste like fizzy orange soda. While there isn’t a whole lot of science behind these— home cooked remedies are sometimes the cure that we all need.
