College drinking is a common practice for plenty of students. Maybe you want to let loose, have fun, and experience the college lifestyle you see on television. But, when it comes to doing so safely… what do I need to know?
College Drinking: Avoiding Student Danger and Alcoholism
College gives you a chance to explore your options outside your parent’s influence. Once you move into that dorm, or first apartment, you begin making more choices for yourself. From healthy eating, to exercise, jobs, friends, and college drinking. All of these new choices available to you can be overwhelming. Therefore, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s really important (A.K.A. your education and livelihood).
High-risk drinking
College drinking is extremely common, and not something that has to be alarming to a certain degree. However, when you begin drinking heavily on a regular basis— you’re taking part in ‘high-risk drinking’. ‘High-risk drinking’, according to the NIAA, is a four drinks over two hours for women drinks, and five for men.
This type of college drinking is dangerous due to the fact that it increases you’re chances of alcohol poisoning, sexual abuse, and injuries. Not to mention, heavy drinking can also affect academic performance.
Drinking does not equal alcoholism
The first thing to understand is that healthy drinking is possible. In fact, a drink here or there can actually do your body good. However, it’s very easy to lose track of casual drinking and begin a habit— especially if you’re drinking for the wrong reasons.
Lastly, college drinking comes in many forms, and it’s up to you to choose wisely and drink responsibly. Gone are the days of your parents monitoring your every move. Now, it’s all on you. We wish you luck in this new stage, and extend our congratulations on taking this big step towards your adult life!
