The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department recently released its first quarter report regarding the crime rate. Compared to the same period last year violent crime has decreased 5.3 percent. However the number of reported rapes has increased by 17.3 percent as compared to last year. Investigators have investigated a total of 61 rapes since January 1st compared to 52 last year.
The number of reported robberies has also increased as compared to last year. The numbers of robberies reported are up by 0.2 percent this quarter. Other crimes on the report however are decreasing. Aggravated assaults have decreased by 9.5 percent, residential burglaries are down by 17.7 percent and commercial burglaries are down by 10.1 percent. The rate of homicide in Charlotte has decreased as well with 8 homicides being investigated so far compared to 12 at this point last year.
