Court dockets across the state of North Carolina are extremely full and causing many cases to experience long wait times before they are heard. A lot of these cases involve DWI charges. To help combat this problem counties across the state have been implementing special DWI courts to process just DWI cases. Columbus and Brunswick County are two of these places, but this could be coming to an end soon.
DWI courts are funded by grants from the state. These two localities recently lost funding for the DWI courts this year. The funding is scheduled to end on March 1. When this happens DWI cases will be flooded back into the normal court dockets. As a result people handling these cases are likely to experience lengthier wait times to have their cases heard. These counties have re-applied for the grant but it could take months until the DWI courts could begin again.
