A man from eastern North Carolina was recently sentenced in federal court in connection with selling counterfeit prescription pills in Charlotte. The incident occurred in 2010 when Charlotte-Mecklenburg police arrested the man for selling counterfeit pills. They found 500 fake Viagra pills and over 200 fake Cialis pills in his vehicle.
The investigation by police revealed the man had sold over 500 fake Viagra pills previously and was planning to do so again when police arrested him. The pills the man was selling were designed to look just like their legitimate prescription counterparts. An examination of the pills revealed they did have active pharmaceutical ingredients in them but it was not known what the strength of each pill was.
The man had a jury trial in February of 2012 in which he was convicted of conspiracy to traffic counterfeit prescription medication bearing counterfeit trademarks, trafficking counterfeit prescriptions bearing counterfeit trademarks, and selling and hording for sale of counterfeit prescription medications with intent to defraud and mislead. His sentence is two years in federal prison and a $10,000 fine.
